Several important reasons why older people do not use smartphones

1.Low skin sensitivity of the fingers

Studies have found that the reason why elderly people often poke at their mobile phone screens is that the skin of their fingers is much less sensitive than that of our younger counterparts. This skin sensitivity gets weaker as we get older.

2.Decreased visual acuity, colour discrimination and visual range

As people get older, their vision, colour discrimination and range of vision decline. For a 60 year old, the amount of light that can enter their retina is only 20% of that of a 20-year-old, and this figure is only 12% by the age of 70.

3.Decreased hearing sensitivity

A person’s hearing gradually diminishes with age. Even voices that were once familiar, even those of close relatives, can begin to become difficult to recognise.
